Certain cancers are undoubtedly more famous than colorectal cancer. Breast cancer is widely talked about on the news and social media, as statistics have it as the second most common cancer in women and men worldwide. Colon cancer used to be most common in people over their 50s. Currently, however, according to a University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center study published in the 2015 edition of the JAMA Surgery journal, the number of 20 and 30-year-olds who will be diagnosed with colon cancer is set to increase by 90% by 2030. The number of rectal cancer cases could increase by a whopping 124%. For people 35-49, the incidence rates may increase by 28% to 46%, respectively.
So why the change? And why is it that there are more and more young people being diagnosed with this specific cancer? The main culprit is the western diet. Deep-fried and processed foods containing refined cooking oils and white sugar are now the primary sources of “nutrition” that many people consume. These foods create a toxic overload within our system, which is like fertilizer for cancer.
Hippocrates, who has been dubbed, “The Father of Medicine”, once said that ‘all disease begins in the gut’. Due to consuming nonorganic, genetically modified, highly processed foods, many people have over 20 toxic chemicals that are being produced in the colon and causing poisonous build-up. These toxins often include phenols, indoles, amines, and ammonia.
Over the past 100 years, our planet has become much more toxic, making it even more imperative yet challenging, that we choose our foods wisely and carefully. Our food supply is contaminated with more than 3,000 chemicals, which are added to enhance the flavor, appearance, and shelf life. Millions of metric tons of pesticides are used annually on the crops that we consume.
Avoid Constipation –Starting the day by drinking a glass of pure water not only rehydrates the body but is useful for flushing out the toxins the body has been working to remove during the night. Fresh seasonal fruit is like a broom that sweeps clean the waste from the body with its high fiber content. Be sure to wash fruit well in a container of pure water (5 parts water and 1 part white vinegar) to remove harmful chemicals. Daily physical activity, such as a 20 to 30-minute walk, stretching, rebounding, and any action to get your body moving are all conducive to staying regular and maintaining good health. Throughout the day, drinking a liter to a liter and a half of pure spring water is essential. Structured water is best as it is much more bio-available. Following the Budwig diet often aids in resolving any constipation.
Colonic Irrigation –The Budwig Center uses colonic irrigation to remove mucoid plaque. Some people have a hard build-up of mucoid plaque in the colon, which may hinder the body from absorbing nutrients and eliminating metabolic toxins and waste optimally. Mucoid plaque builds up slowly over the years without showing any signs of serious problems, and many of us have excess mucus stuck in our bowels and do not even know it.
Processed Meats – Commercially processed meats such as sausages, ham, bacon, hot dogs, etc. should be avoided, especially for those diagnosed with colon cancer. The Budwig Diet is mainly plant-based; however, if you do eat meat, consider lowering the quantity per meal and eat only meat that is organic, grass-fed, and hormone and antibiotic-free. Pork is to be avoided because it often carries the heaviest toxic load. A recent study conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) discovered that 69% of commercial pork, 55% of beef, 39% of chicken, and a whopping 81% of turkey tested positive for antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as Campylobacter and Salmonella.
All fish with fins and scales are what Dr. Budwig recommended for her cancer patients. Consume fish that is fresh and farm-free. Avoid seafood such as lobster, shrimp, squid, clams, etc. as they are bottom feeders and are essentially the cleaners of the oceans and seas and also carry a toxic load.
Food Combining – Proteins and starches do not mix well in the same meal and actually neutralize each other, which can lead to indigestion. Improper food combining is one of the primary factors that cause malnutrition, gas, flatulence, heartburn, and upset stomach. Fruit is much like water, so in about 20 minutes, it is ready to move on. So never consume fruit with or just after eating meat, which can take up to eight (8) hours to digest. According to Dr. Wayne Pickering, “it gets trapped in your stomach with all the other food, where it starts to rot as it’s not being chemically digested there. Therefore, eat fruit 30-60 minutes before other food.” Many people finish a meal with melon, which is one of the hardest combinations to digest. “Eat melon alone, or leave it alone, or your stomach will moan,” says Dr. Pickering.
You can avoid colon cancer and in fact, many cancers by making wise lifestyle and food choices. We encourage not only our cancer patients but also their friends and family that come to the Budwig Center to adopt the basic Dr. Budwig way of eating and living. Many believe the body gets sick easily and is quite weak by nature. But just the opposite is true. Our body is designed to be healthy, and the reason we often get sick is that we are not living the right lifestyle and eating the proper foods.
