Linseed (Flaxseed) Oil and Cottage Cheese Help to Tackle Some 50 Common Illnesses

Omega 3 is Essential for Good Health

There was a study done in 1994 with 121 women who had advanced breast cancer that spread to the lymph nodes. The study revealed that they had very low levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the breast tissue. Another study from Boston University using the very same type of tissue profiles demonstrated that patients with coronary artery disease also had low levels of EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids found in Omega 3 oils).

Dr. Johanna Budwig discovered that adequate amounts of omega 3 oils and sulphurated protein, which is contained in the Linseed oil and Cottage cheese combination, was a tremendous anti-cancer prevention and treatment strategy.

There are many plants that are rich in Omega 3, but linen or flax oil is the richest source of these fatty acids (naturally occurring variations not considered, 100g of oil contain 72g of polyunsaturated fatty acids, 54g of which are omega-3 acids).

When linseed oil is combined with protein (or more precisely, sulphurated amino acids, which is found in abundance in quark/cottage cheese) there is a chemical reaction that takes place that allows the highly unsaturated fatty acids to become water-soluble, enabling them to more easily enter the cells and flood the body with life-giving oxygen.

Dr. Budwig recognized the need to oxygenate the body because harmful microbes cannot live in the presence of oxygen. Every day we are exposed to microbes and pathogens, such as parasites, viruses, fungus, as well as harmful toxins that cause illnesses. However, these microbes and pathogens cannot survive in an oxygen-rich environment.

For example, products such as commercial cooking oils and margarine actually shut down the natural electrical field of our cells. Dr. Budwig stated that “artificial oils and trans fats (or partially hydrogenated oils) such as oils used in our kitchen….are extracted from corn, sunflowers, and other plants, by extreme heat, chemicals or other artificial processes, and not a natural process for cold extraction.”

As you know, our bodies produce over 500 million new cells every single day. Dr. Budwig pointed out that in producing new cells, there is a dipolarity between the electrically positive nucleus and the electrically negative cell membrane that contains high unsaturated fatty acids. Now when cell division takes place, the original cell and the new daughter cell must contain enough electron-rich fatty acids in its surface area to divide off completely from the old cell. When this process is interrupted by highly refined cooking oils and unhealthy fats, the body begins to allow chronic and terminal diseases to take hold of our bodies.

How to prepare Dr.Budwig’s oil-protein muesli with quark/cottage cheese/ricotta and flaxseed (linseed) oil

STEP 1
Mix 2 tablespoons of low fat milk with 3 tablespoons linseed oil using an electric stick type blender until nice a smooth. (an electric blender is preferred as you can be surer the oil blends well with all the other ingredients)

STEP 2
Next add 1 teaspoon of honey and mix all 3 ingredients well together.

STEP 3
Now slowly add the low-fat quark or cottage cheese or Ricotta 2 tablespoons at a time and keep mixing until it is mixed well, putting in a total of 6 level tablespoons of Low Fat Quark/cottage cheese/Ricotta.

STEP 4
In a separate bowl put 2 tablespoons of freshly ground flaxseeds that you have ground up with a coffee grinder and covered with 1 teaspoon of honey.

STEP 5
Put some fruit or nuts over the seeds and honey.

STEP 6
Then finally pour the creamy mixture of quark, honey and oil over the flaxseed and honey and fruit. That is the original way Dr. Budwig liked to prepare it for her patients.

IMPORTANT! Please be advised that step 2 (adding the flaxseeds) is not applicable to patients with cancer of the colon, rectum and especially patients who have had a colostomy as the seeds could irritate the intestinal wall.

FLAXSEEDS:

If you are not able to get fresh pressed flaxseed oil or you would like to benefit from the nutrition that the flax shell provides then you can make the muesli using flaxseeds instead of flaxseed oil.

  • Put 12 tablespoons of organic flaxseeds into a bowl and triple the amount pure water to cover the seeds and then soak overnight.
  • Using an upright stick type electric blender, grind and blend up half the amount of soaked seeds (you need to consume the muesli twice a day thus the other half of presoaked seeds will be used in the afternoon).
  • Add to 6 tablespoons of low fat (2% or less) cottage cheese or quark (organic if possible).
  • 3 tablespoons of low-fat skim milk (avoid UHT milk) and blend with electric stick type blender for a minute.
  • Now add 2 teaspoons of raw honey and add fruit or nuts of your choice. (see Optional)

Optional

Add the juice of ½ a lemon makes it very palatable and a great fresh taste. Also, fruit, especially berries can be added. Be creative and for a change some days try adding things like parsley, garlic, dried fruits, ground hemp seeds, ground almonds, ground sunflower seeds, Brazil nuts, and pumpkin seeds (do not use peanuts), vanilla, cinnamon, raw cocoa or grated coconut. Some prefer a touch of cayenne pepper.

WARNING:

This muesli turns rancid after 20 minutes, so it must be ingested immediately. Do not grind and store seeds to be used later.  The flaxseed oil must be kept cold, so store it in the fridge. Try to purchase directly from the manufacturer, (e.g. Barlean´s, N. America, or Linovita, Europe), or from an herbalist/health food shop. The cottage cheese/quark can be frozen if necessary.

  1. Hi, I make a sort of “parfait” with a similar mixture, layering it with frozen blueberries and raw walnuts. It ends up tasting like cheesecake, the ingredients are as follows: cottage cheese, flaxseed oil, MCT oil, small pinch of vanilla bean powder, xylitol, and stevia. Is the MCT oil counteractive or beneficial? My initial thought was that it was beneficial but it can easily be taken out of my recipe. Thank for your time, Savana

  2. Hello, I have a question about the Flaxseed oil. Usually do find it in stores but they are not refrigerated. in the stores. Is that all right? Does it need refrigerating before or once I buy it and open it?

      It would be ideal if the store kept them refrigerated and it would be worth it to ask them to do this for you if they have a fridge to store other items they are selling.
      If you worry about the oil not being fresh, you can make the mixture with twice the amount of seeds and soak them before blending them all together. The problem is that the texture will be quite different. Very thick. So you will need to add some oat milk, almond milk or even water to make it easier to take.

      Thank you for contacting us with your question. Dr. Johanna Budwig recommended using the hand blender to ensure that the mixture is homogenous and to obtain the chemical reaction desired. If you were able to obtain whipped cream with a hand whisk in cream, that would be about how much effort it would take to obtain the chemical reaction. Dr. Johanna Budwig encouraged fermented foods like sauerkraut, sauerkraut juice and therefore Kefir and Jun Kombucha tea would be good to have before a meal, to help digestion. Having said that though, Kefir is not a replacement for the cottage cheese in order to obtain the desired results when mixing with flaxseed oil.       You can prepare a large portion and simply serve each person according to their appetite. Some days they will eat more and others they will eat less. Teenagers usually eat as much or more than adults so for children and toddlers calculate about ½ a portion. As long as you remember the ratio of 1:2 of the oil to the cottage cheese or quark when preparing it you will be fine.

  3. Hello Kathy.
    I have chronic hepatitis B and now am told I have primary liver cancer. A friend advise I take the protocol which I have been on for 3 weeks now. I now have jaundice. Could it be that the protocol is not for liver cancer?

      Thank you for sending us your question. The Budwig diet and protocol is beneficial for ALL types of cancer but applying it personally there is a possibility that one isn’t doing it correctly.

      At the clinic we have also seen that we need to personalize recommendations. We have found patients that don’t react favorably to taking the Budwig mixture with seeds.

  4. Hello Kathy,
    Fighting stage IV colorectal cancer with mets to the liver, I noticed that the website said we should not use flax seed in the recipe for Flax oil and cottage cheese. Why shouldn’t we use Flax seed in the mixture. What kind of cottage cheese should we use (any with 2% fat)? Is it recommended to eat this while on Chemo? Lastly, I wanted to start with eating this 2x day, how many days should we do this protocol?

      Thank you for sending us these questions. The flaxseeds can be too irritating to the colorectal area so simply add 1 extra tablespoon of the oil. The cottage cheese would not have added sugar but other than that there are no specifications. If you are not nauseous you can eat it while taking chemo. Once a day minimum and twice a day maximum. Even after you don’t have cancer anymore you should continue eating it 3 times a week or so for maintenance. Meanwhile try to eat it every day.

    I have a question about the type of cottage cheese used for this recipe. I read your saying that it can only have a “maximum 2% fat,” but am curious how the cottage cheese we buy in the store decides what is 1%, 2%, 4%, etc fat. How do they determine this? I only ask because I’d like to make my own drained (and possibly pressed) cottage cheese from grassfed and finished raw milk, but am unable to find information about how much of a fat % that would be considered, nor anything else much about the calories, carbs, etc found in such.

    1. Thank you for contacting us with this question. The fat content of food is determined by the ingredients that can contain fat, which in this case would be the milk used. We haven’t become chemists nor do we elaborate our own quark or cottage cheese so we only help you with recipes that follow the Budwig diet, but not with elaborating homemade quark or cottage cheese. We do recommend trusting professionals when it comes to getting the fat content and sulfurated protein percentages correct as this is done in laboratories and other equipment to ensure it is analyzed and labeled correctly.

  7. What if after consuming this, there’s extreme pain in the stomach? I mixed 6 tablespoon of flaxseed oil and half a cup of cottage cheese. After the 3rd tablespoon serving.. My Father started having extreme pain in the stomach. Is it too strong?

      Thank you for getting in touch with us with this question. This symptom is certainly not a good sign. Was it mixed using a hand blender or only a whisk? did you also add honey and seeds? some don’t react well to the mixture unless they add the seeds and honey. The diet is about more than just taking this recipe too but if your father would be able to come to the clinic and get tested to get advice regarding foods and options that work for him, that would be ideal.

    I am dealing with 2 autoimmune disorders with 2 family members. They may have more but these are the known diagnosis. 1 with Hashimotos and the other Graves. Both are said to be diseases but I only see them labeled as such to attach a drug or supplement to it for profit. 3 months on natural protocols from Endocrinology and previous patients who became Natural Drs. Both are medicated 1 the medication ceased to he effective and led to a complete immune shut down (hashimotos) the other is progressively getting worse she now has no energy and the diet she is on is all cooked vegetables only no lectins or gluten most of the do not eat on the Budwig Diet. So considering this diet/protocol. Would it be appropriate to do since neither has energy and it’s Winter time less sunlight. Both have tumors on kidneys and thyroid nodules. I personally used and successfully coached someone 10 years ago using this diet and Protocol but that was for stage 3 lung Cancer. Should we consult with you or just let our advisors know of the decision to pause or stop their treatment and go right into Dr Budwig’s system?

  9. All of the additives in store bought cottage cheese does not matter? Cow milk kefir would not substitute for the cottage cheese? It has to be 2% or can it be less? Thank you for your help

      One would ideally look for a product with the minimum of additives or make the cottage cheese at home. Kefir cottage cheese is another product some are starting to make at home. It becomes difficult to source pure ingredients sometimes. It can for sure be less than 2%. The one we use is 0.2% fat. Kefir however is not the ideal substitute as it doesn’t have the same amount of protein needed to have the same effect when mixing with the oil.

  10. I do not feel comfortable taking the flaxseed oil as I am on my 3rd time with breast cancer ER and PR positive. Can you give me a recipe using gound Chia seeds with the cottage cheese. What would be the correct ratio? Thank you!!

      We understand. this is a common concern and usually patients are told that the correct treatment for a case like yours is to completely block the hormone receptors. Dr. Budwig’s approach is to balance them and this is what flaxseeds and flaxseed oil does.   11. This is the only place I have seen reference to ricotta cheese being used in the Budwig diet instead of cottage cheese or quark. I just want to verify then that you are saying ricotta is a suitable replacement. It tastes better and has a better consistency I think so that would be great if I could use it instead.

  12. I just had a colonoscopy & have Crohn’s disease, fairly advanced. Doctor wants to treat me with Remecade. Is it ok to take the cottage cheese recipe with crohns & in your experience does is it effective for crohns?

    1. Dear Marcia, you might want to try preparing it without the flaxseeds first, adding an extra tabelspoon of the oil. Then another day try preparing it with the seeds and honey and see if you notice if one is easier for you to digest. The Budwig muesli as well as the diet is ideal for patients trying to treat their digestive track. You should notice a big difference when you stop eating meat, stick to whole foods and good fats.     1. Dear Laura, I’m glad you are loving it. A healthy body is fairly intuitive and I would trust that while you are loving it, have it daily and yes, it will help with so many areas of your health. It could be that in a few months you feel like taking it less often and that is fine. Your 2 year old and her pregnant mother can also take it. Remember that this thins the blood so best to stop close to the months she could be giving birth to avoid any excess hemorrhaging.

  15. Hello, I just began this about 10 days ago. I have been using 3 TBSP of organic flax oil and 6 TBSP of organic cottage cheese. I mix them with an immersion blender, but it is difficult to mix since it’s a small batch and very thick. Then mixed well, I put it with freshly ground flax and some berries. Instead of adding milk to make it thinner, would it be ok to add a couple TBSP of water (maybe water mixed with asorbic acid – I’ve been trying to increase my vitamin C)? I want to make sure that what I’m doing is the most effective. I also wonder if it’s ok that I haven’t been adding honey. I have recurrent ovarian cancer and am using this as a way to heal. Thank you for your advice.

    1. Dear Anna, adding the milk is not only for texture but for a chemical reaction with the flaxseed oil. The protein and fat mixed together like this help the intestinal wall absorb the benefits of the flaxseed oil better and oxygenate our cells. It sounds like you have many good ideas about how to take care of yourself and yes it’s ok if you don’t add honey. What we do here at the clinic is test each patient to know how they should take the mixture according to their digestive capacities. Do you work with a kinesiologist to help you with that? It does make a difference to get guidance at a time like this.

  16. Hello, I’m also wondering if it’s ok that I’m eating this in the evening. My daily routine has been to consume as many raw vegetables as possible throughout the day. I’m also juicing. I have been adding this as an evening snack. Is the time of day important? (I have also been doing ozone water.)

    1. Dear Anna, it would be ideal to have it before 5 pm or so, just because of the raw oil in it. The pancreas would process it better early in the day. Occasionally having a portion in the evening is ok, but if you notice it heavy, hard to digest or any nausea, switch to having it earlier.

  17. I have a friend who read that using a hand held blender with a metal blade ruins the electrical potential of the mix. He now just loosely mixes the oil with the cottage cheese, using a wooden spoon. How did Joanna Budwig blend her mixture? His mixture involves just stirring it with a spoon as best he can. How can I convince him that it needs to be completely blended?

    1. Dear Douglas. She did use a spoon, whisk or fork but it needs to be completely homogenous. It takes great effort, like making whipped cream with a whisk or fork. These utensils are metal so why not use a device that has a motor which makes it easier and ensures it is properly whipped? Some cancer patients are preparing this for themselves and would not be strong enough to mix it well without a hand blender.

  18. Hi, what about women dealing with estrogen dominance. Since flax seed contain phytoestrogens, chemicals that actually mimic estrogen. Would this mixture help or make worse this condition?? Thank you.

  19. I am glad I read the comments today. I was about to put my husband on this protocol. He just recently had a heart attack and a stint. He is diagnosed with artery disease . You told someone else that this combination is a blood thinner. Would it not be unsafe to take along with the Brilinta and aspirin already prescribed by his cardiologist. I feel that if I ask him about it, he will discourage this protocol because MD’s rarely trust anything but drugs. I also do not want to discount the drugs as they are the accepted protocol to assure success of the stint. Have you worked with patients and their cardiologists to successfully navigate this issue?

    1. Dear Kathy, thank you for sending this question. Our body reacts better to food and natural options but the MDs do trust the drugs that have scientific evidence of working. So if you start changing his diet and add the Budwig muesli is a few times a week, the only effect it can have is that the doctor decides to reduce the amount of blood thinners he has to take. He should simply work closer with the doctor, telling him he has changed his diet to make sure it is one that is healthy for his heart and that he’d like regular blood tests done so as not to take higher dosages than necessary.   20. I noticed a footnote that said do not grind the flaxseeds and store for later use. Does that also mean do not use ground flax seed purchased already ground? What about using purchased ground sprouted flax seed? Does the sprouting add any benefit?

    1. That is correct. You should add them to the mixture freshly ground.

      As for sprouted flaxseeds, these can be eaten whole or ground. Sprouted they are easier to digest so they would not need to be ground.

      ESTROGENS and BREAST and OVARIAN HORMONES Flaxseeds contain a weak plant estrogen called lignans. Lignans can help improve the way your body metabolizes its own estrogen. This, in turn, can reduce the development of fibroid tumors. The recommended intake is about two tablespoons of ground flaxseed per day. By doing this, you can reduce the development of those tumors by 20%. Flax contains lignans, which may have an antioxidant effect and block or suppress cancerous changes. Dr. Budwig did not encourage the consumption of flaxseeds on their own but always with some other food product. The cottage cheese or Quark when mixed with the flaxseed oil and freshly ground flaxseeds, creates a powerful anti-cancer formula. Dr. Budwig noticed that it created a lot of natural oxygen, which of course, greatly helps destroy cancer-causing pathogens.
