Melatonin “High Dose” May Support Cancer

The Secrets of Melatonin

Most of us were excited when experts started talking about the “miracle melatonin” discovery.  It was dubbed the “youth hormone” and the “natural sleep remedy” for those who suffer from insomnia.  However, as many of us tried it only a few found it really helped them sleep better or noticed any other health benefits

Recently new evidence has emerged that “high doses” of pure unadulterated (no added artificial additives or sweeteners) melatonin is the secret to obtaining real benefits.

Researchers and cancer experts like Dr. Walter Pierpaoli and Dr. Frank Shallenberger MD found you need to take at the right type daily to “sleep like a stone” and feel the benefits of this “youth hormone”.  For people with cancer there are specific instructions.

Melatonin may Help Support Cancer in Four Different Ways

Cancer is a growing health problem that needs an urgent response to control it. A prediction from the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) expected 27.5 million cancer cases every year by 2040.[1] These values represent a 61.7% increase compared with current statistics. Accordingly, melatonin could be an excellent candidate for the prevention and support of several cancers, such as brain cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, gastric cancer, and colorectal cancer,[2] etc.  The discovery of melatonin in specific doses for cancer is certainly welcome news.

In a Memorial Sloan Kettering review on melatonin with chemotherapy [3], MST conclude that there is a:

  • 40% greater one-year survival
  • 93% greater chance of having a complete response (no tumour identified)
  • 253% greater chance of having a partial response
  • 15% chance of having stable disease after the combined therapy
  • Significantly reduced weakness, fatigue, sickness and lowering of white cell count.

New clinical trials are now progressing.

Melatonin may also decrease risk for and aid treatment of COVID-19 and other RNA viral infections [4]

For estrogen dominant breast cancers and testosterone prostate cancers, melatonin is a key. Melatonin has a direct and an indirect cancer supporting effect. It proves a very pleiotropic effect on cancer. On average, the combined results of these studies show that melatonin reduces the death rate by a whopping 44% [5]. These are from human studies.

Russel J. Reiter, PhD, unquestionably the greatest melatonin animal researcher in the world, with more than 1,383 scientific articles to date (that averages 25 papers per year for 55 years). Melatonin is produced and released in your pineal gland as a response to darkness. [6]

Scientists fed a group of mice cancer-producing adenocarcinoma and what they noticed—using a method of measuring the growth rate of cancer—was that each night the growth rate of cancer slowed down when the lights were turned off. (When the body produces melatonin). What they also discovered was that each morning when the power was restored, the growth rate of their cancers and tumors resumed.  Most people with a cancer stage 1 or 2 can live for many years, but it’s when the cancer starts to grow and metastasize (spread) thus leading to stage 3 or 4 that eventually ends their life.  Specific doses of melatonin have shown to stop metastasis according to Dr Reiter.

Dr. Walter Pierpaoli, one of the world’s leading clinical melatonin researchers, has successfully used daily dosages ranging from 0.1 to 200 mg. That’s a 2,000-fold difference between the lowest dose and the highest! Studies on mice show that even at astronomical doses of 300 mg per day for two years, there were no side effects.  Dr. Pierpaoli is the author of such books as; “Reversal of Aging – Resetting the Pineal Clock”, “The Aging Clock”, and “The Melatonin Miracle” to mention a few.

Plus, when it is administered in combination with chemotherapy, a synergistic effect has been found in several cancer types.

Chemotherapy, Radiation and Melatonin

Patients who submitted to chemotherapy and/or radiation and took high doses of melatonin at the same time had little or no side effects. So, if the need arises to get an MRI, take melatonin. For radiation therapy take higher doses of melatonin about an hour before your MRI.

Melatonin:

  • May help with the anti-proliferation (stops spreading of cancer)
  • May help with the induction of apoptosis (causes death to cancer cells)
  • May help with the inhibition of invasion and metastasis
  • Enhancement of immunomodulation (boosts the immune system).
  • Protects against viral and bacterial infections,
  • Prevents cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure,
  • Reduces oxidant stress and inflammation and slows aging,
  • Prevents neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s
  • Improves menopause therapy
  • Protects against ionizing radiation
  • Prevents macular degeneration

Melatonin Helps with Brain Cancer as It Can Pass the Blood Brain Barrier

Few substances can pass the blood brain barrier, however melatonin can.  In fact, melatonin rapidly crosses the blood-brain barrier and enters the central nervous system. It is thus beneficial for brain cancers and Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia. Melatonin does not alter any other hormones. As such, there is no negative feedback inhibition.

Is High Dose Melatonin Dangerous?

A report in Medscape states that even 800 mg/kg of body weight was not found to be fatal. Humans given between 1 gm and 6.5 gm per day for 30-45 days produced no negatives [7] when their blood was analyzed.

What Dr. Frank Shallenberger MD says that any reports of side effects of Melatonin are due to the poor quality of the product and artificial additives.  He said not to take Melatonin in tablets (artificial additives are used to make the tablets) or liquid with added artificial sweeteners as this can cause some side-effects.  Only 100% pure melatonin powder is recommended.

Pure melatonin powder combined with Moringa is an excellent combination for supporting cancer.  So do not be alarmed if you read reports that Melatonin [8] has been linked to headache, dizziness, nausea, stomach cramps, drowsiness, confusion or disorientation, irritability and mild anxiety, depression and tremors, as well as abnormally low blood pressure and allergies.

Dr. Walter Pierpaoli, one of the world’s leading clinical melatonin researchers, has successfully used daily dosages on mice show even at astronomical doses of 300 mg per day for two years, there were no side effects. Dr. Frank Shallenberger MD who regularly treats cancer patients with similar high doses reports no side effects.

Budwig Center Combines Protocols

At the Budwig Center we use other cancer supporting remedies combined.  One of these remedies is FENp53 (Fenbendazole with activation supplements)

In a 2008 study under the approval of the Johns Hopkins Institute, a research team injected four groups of rodents with cancer cells. They fed one of the groups with a formula called FEN p53 used for parasites, pinworms, tapeworms, etc. Three of the four groups all grew tumors; in fact, one of the largest tumors reached a calculated volume of 1500 mm3.
